Ewe hogget finalists
01-07-2010 | Not Specified
Finalists in the New Zealand Ewe Hogget competition have been announced.
David and Lisa Anderson, of Kurow, won the fine-wool section, Kyle Burnett of Moa Flat the composite, and Nelson's Gary Basher was the Romney winner.
Crossbred winners were Nelson and Fiona Hancox, while Allan and Leeanne Woodrow won the Perendale section. Eddie and Grace Thwaites won the Coopworth title.
Competition judges said they were pleased with the entries. The stock were well-presented, with production and quality good despite the drought.
The judges were impressed with the entrants' enthusiasm and positive attitudes during the interview stage of the competition.
One of the judges, Stephen Rabbidge, said the quality was on a par with other years. The challenges were the same but the class of country and breeds were different.
"No matter where you farm, everyone struggles to feed their sheep when you want to."
Rabbidge said there was massive value in running the competition because it gave an insight into how flocks would perform in the future.
The overall winner will be announced after presentations by the finalists at the NZ Ewe Hogget competition dinner in Gore on July
22.
